The Aging Demographic of America –Today’s Elderly Differs from Their Predecessors

The aging baby boomer population has been discussed and focused on for years. In 2008, they began hitting retirement age. The demographics and state of the economy are changing significantly as a outcome?. Americans over the age of 65 represented 12.8% of the country’s population. That’s one in eight. Since 1900, the percentage of older people has tripled and longevity is increasing.  In 2008, there were 13 million people between 75 and 84, which is 17 times more than at the turn of the last century. Americans over the age of 85 has increased by 47 times.

It is estimated that the older population will grow rapidly between 2010 and 2030. The baby boomer generation is reaching 65. Today’s older people are unlike from their predecessors in many ways. They have higher levels of education, are healthier and have lower rates of disability. The implication on both society and the economy are expected to be profound.  There will be dramatic changes on all levels, from national to local, as well as the family structure. In many cases, the family changes are a result of divorce.  The National Institute of Health has completed their analysis of the aging population.

They have collected data that they believe is crucial to defining national policy as we address the challenges presented by the health needs of older people. By 2030, one out of five Americans will be 65 or older, almost doubling since 2006. That means that the age group of those 85 and older is the fastest growing segment of the US population. Health in these age groups have improved in recent years, but there are still many aging Americans who are disabled and suffer from chronic conditions that require elevated levels of health care. The most common conditions are heart disease and arthritis.

Higher levels in education are linked to better health and higher income levels. This results with a higher standard of living during retirement. Although there are still wide variations in income and wealth, the percentage of older people has decreased to less than 10%, primarily attributed to the support of Social Security. In 1950, only 17% of Americans finished high school versus 71.5% in 2003. By 2030, 25% of the aging population will have at least an undergraduate degree. This change is significantly altering American economics. Health care needs will shift and we will be faced with the largest population over the age of 65 in history.
